the skill of coding with AI requires holding the system of what you're trying to build in your head and communicating it. it involves:
- defining boundaries: core abstractions? what should this component know? where does state live?
- specify invariants: what must always be true? constants and defaults that make the system work?
- guide decomposition: how should this break down? what's the natural structure?
- maintain coherence: ensure AI fits the existing patterns, boundaries, and mental model.
great architects and designers do this: they hold the system design in their head and guide AI towards coherence. the agents are very fast executors.
thinking feels optional with AI, but people who prompt their way into the codebase without understanding can't debug because they never designed it; can't extend because there's no structure, just accumulated slop.
